Today I picked nettles. And as I was in the garden, I thought that relationships are very much like nettles: tasty but stingy. It doesn’t matter how careful you are, but if you want to be involved, chances are you will get stung. So how to go about it? Yoga gives us the tools to accept that pain is part of life, accept the fear that we - and others - have of this potential pain, and to still do our best to face it with integrity and respect. The biggest cause of all pain according to the Yoga Sutras is Avidya, ignorance. Believing that happiness or pain will last forever. That one person is going to make us happy. Even the image that we project on that person - how he/she is in our minds might not correspond to how he/she is in reality. It may look like another plant, but it’s nettle! Like wearing gloves, Yoga helps us to be immune to the expectations (the stingy parts) and to see things as they are. I know, it takes a bit of effort and it’s risky, then why even bother? Well, once we master it, we can cook a beautiful risotto. *** Oggi ho raccolto le ortiche. Mi ci è voluto un po’ per capire il metodo, ma l’ho trovato. E mentre ero in giardino, ho pensato che le relazioni sono molto simili alle ortiche: saporite ma pungenti. Per quanto ci sforziamo di essere attenti, se vogliamo essere coinvolti rischiamo di pungerci. Come procedere? Lo yoga ci da gli strumenti per accettare che il dolore fa parte della vita, accettare la paura che noi - e gli altri - abbiamo verso questo possibile dolore, e di affrontarla con integrità e rispetto. La principale causa del dolore secondo gli Yoga Sutra è Avidya, l’ignoranza. Credere che la felicità o il dolore dureranno per sempre. Anche l’immagine che abbiamo della persona - come lui/lei appare nella nostra mente non corrisponde necessariamente a come è in realtà. Potrebbe sembrare un’altra pianta, ma è un’ortica! Come se indossassimo guanti, yoga ci aiuta ad essere immuni alle aspettative (la parte urticante) e a prendere le cose come sono. Lo so, ci vuole un po’ di sforzo ed è rischioso, quindi perché provare? Beh, per cucinare un risotto stupendo! #yogalife #gardenyoga #gardening @yogacaraisolalunga

In times of quarantine, I decided to clean the windows. Now that I don’t have any more excuse, it was time to take the cloth and roll up my sleeves. As I was rubbing and rubbing, I noticed how important it is to see things clearly. Windows are our outlook on the world, the filter through which we see reality. They are our glasses, our judgements, our attitude to life. And still, it’s so easy to forget. To start with, we need to open the windows, question ourselves, challenge those fixed ideas that are now crystallised. Habits, thoughts, beliefs. By moving the glass and changing perspective, we understand which spots come from the inside and which from the outside. And slowly, with patience and attention. The dirt will dissolve and our sight will be better. Meditation is this, remembering to clean our inner windows. Namaste *** In tempi di quarantena, ho deciso di lavare i vetri. Ora che non ho più scuse, era arrivato il momento di prendere lo straccio e rimboccarmi le maniche. Mentre strofinavo e strofinavo, mi accorgevo di quanto sia importante vederci chiaro. Le finestre rappresentano il nostro sguardo sul mondo, sono il filtro attraverso cui guardiamo la realtà che ci circonda. Sono i nostri occhiali, il nostro giudizio, la nostra attitudine alla vita. E tuttavia, chi ci pensa mai. Per cominciare, occorre aprire le finestre, farci delle domande, mettere in discussione quelle idee datate che si sono ormai cristallizzate. Abitudini, pensieri, convinzioni. Muovendo il vetro in varie angolazioni e cambiando prospettiva, capiamo quali macchie vengono dall’interno e quali dall’esterno. E piano piano, con pazienza e attenzione, lo sporco scomparirà e la nostra vista sarà migliore. La meditazione è questo, ricordarsi di pulire i nostri vetri. *** English below L’altro giorno ho comprato i datteri. Quel tipo di datteri che si sciolgono in bocca come burro. Buonissimi. Appena li ho visti, la mia bocca ha iniziato a salivare e la mia mente a ricrearne il sapore. Ho aspettato per un paio di ore, le ho pre-assaporate e quando finalmente ho aperto la busta ero così eccitata da finire a ingurgitare questi frutto meravigliosi mentre camminavo. Uno dopo l’altro. Certo, erano buoni - ho persino fatto una foto! - ma ad essere onesti il mio piacere era assopito, distratto, frettoloso. Quando la sera ho incontrato un amico, ho finalmente realizzato l’insegnamento dietro a questo episodio. “Casualmente”, ha citato un detto della tradizione taoista “quando cammino, cammino, quando mangio, mangio, quando parlo, parlo...”. Avevo coperto il mio presente con un sacco di filtri basati sul mio passato e sul mio futuro e in quella confusione ho dimenticato di fare piena esperienza di quel momento. Quali sono quei filtri? Quali quei pensieri? Come posso superarli? Vedremo che cosa succede la prossima volta che comprerò i datteri. Come sempre, la sfida è aperta a tutti. *** The other day I bought dates. That kind of dates that melt in your mouth like butter. Delicious. As I saw them, my mouth started watering and my mind began to taste it already. I had been waiting for them, I pre-tasted them mentally for a couple of hours and I was so excited and hungry when I finally opened its bag that I ended up gobbling those marvellous fruits as I was walking in the street. One after the other. Yes, the taste was good - I even took a picture! - but to be honest, my enjoyment was numb, distracted, rushed. When I met a friend in the evening, I could finally see the teaching behind this episode. He “randomly” repeated a quote from the Taoist tradition “when I walk, I walk, when I eat, I eat, when I speak, I speak...”. I was covering the present with a lot of filters based on my past and future, and in that confusion I forgot to live and fully experience the moment. What are those filters? What were those thoughts?
