COOKING TIPS FOR DUMMIES
Maybe because they are busy and prefer to spend their spare time out with friends, maybe because they are too lazy to stay in the kitchen when the supermarket offers delicious ready-made dishes or because the kitchen is small and uncomfortable, students usually are very bad at cooking.
In 5 years libing alone, I still feel dummie with pans, oven and pots, but I’ve learned some tips on how to survive and eat well without spendibg all my money at the restaurant and avoiding MacDonald. Here’s some quick recipes from my italian mom, delicious and easy.
FROG CAKE: IL PASTICCINO A FORMA DI RANA DEL SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Un piccolo dolcetto multicolor, dalla forma curiosa e dal nome ancora più particolare: si chiama frog cake uno dei dolci tipici del South Australia.
Morbidi e zuccherosi, questi pasticcini sono una golosità da non perdere e un ottimo souvenir per chi visita l’Australia e le sue bellezze naturali.
A forma di testa di rana con la bocca aperta, la frog cake è un piccolo dolce a base di pan di spagna e crema o marmellata, ricoperto di glassa colorata.
Nata per riprodurre il frogfish, un tipico pesce della zona molto amato dai bambini, è un dolce tipico del South Australia e si trova in tutte le pasticcerie: colorata e buffa, ha due piccoli occhietti e una bocca che ricordano l’animale dalla forma simpatica e le tinte sgargianti.
La prima frogfish fu creata dalla pasticceria Balfours nel 1922, diventando in breve tempo molto popolare in tutto il South Australia. Originariamente sono state create nel tipico colore verde rana, ma negli anni furono aggiunte diverse varianti di svariati colori, influenzate anche dalle varie festività tradizionali, come quella a “pupazzo di neve” per Natale oppure in versione “pulcino pasquale”.
Come dicevamo, il Frog cake è uno dei dolci tipici del South Australia, e dal 2001 fa parte delle icone del South Australia selezionate dal National Trust of South Australia, organizzazione non governativa che si occupa di preservare e conservare i tratti tipici e le tradizioni dell’Australia.

MANGIAR BENE A KM ZERO: AGRITURISMO GLI ATTORTELLATI IN PROVINCIA DI GROSSETO
Un agriturismo in mezzo alla campagna maremmana, con tanto di stalla, animali e campi coltivati, dove mangiare piatti della tradizione toscana fino allo sfinimento.

Nell’atmosfera casereccia e accogliente del salone con pavimenti in cotto e grandi tavolate in legno, si servono piatti a giro con menù fisso e porzioni abbondanti.

MEAT OVERDOSE AT THE CHURRASCARIA IN WESTBOURNE GROVE
If you adore barbecue meat and boast about a resistant stomach, then go to Rodizio Rico, a traditional Brazilian churrascaria in Westbourne Grove, five minutes walk to Bayswater tube station.
Surely, you must be ready to eat a lot, and very quickly.
We went there without reservation at 8 on a Saturday evening and, luckily, there was a vacant table for three, right in front of the grill.
We sat in the main room, which looks bigger than it really is, because it’s airy and simply organized. On one side there were four lines of wood tables with paper placemats, while on the other part there were the cashier, a rich buffet and the grill. At the bottom of the room there were other tables and the kitchen. The bar and other seats were in a large room downstairs, next to the toilets and another kitchen.
As we ordered some Brazilian beer – we choose Brahma, which tasted very light and refreshing – a friendly waitress gave us a round card with different colours on each side. It worked as a traffic light: “Show the green side if you want food and turn it to the red if you want to stop,” she said, “and you can also have a break and start again a little later if you like.”
